Spatial variation of perceived equity and its determinants in a gateway community of Giant Panda National Park, China

Social equity is essential in the governance of protected areas (PAs), as ignoring such consideration can lead to resistance and jeopardize conservation objectives. However, more research required understand spatial heterogeneity perceived social its underlying factors. Using a survey 361 respondents, we presented distribution patterns by kernel density estimation (KDE) Giant Panda National Park, China. The regression analysis showed that local residents who live closer PA boundary are likely develop negative responses those with easy access tourism spots have positive procedural distributional perceptions. Notably, proximity authority decreases locals’ perceptions fairness all aspects, which potentially due opaque participative channels provided authority. We argue differentials driven intrinsic discrepancy biodiversity protection requirements unevenly distributed consequences management policies. Key steps advance considerations include multi-industry guidance, extending channels, co-producing better compensation plans. Herein, this study appeals greater focus on aspect issues PAs.
